Seventh
Sunday of Easter
FROM OUR PASTOR
Dear St. Charles Parishioners,
On May 31st, the Feast of Pentecost, St.
Charles celebrates a Parish
Picnic in Lubber Run Park. We hope it will be a time to draw together
all the diverse dimensions of our community. This Picnic will mark the
100th Anniversary of this historic community, the first Catholic Parish
established in Arlington County. It will also be the occasion for the
parish to receive a commendation from the General Assembly of Virginia
for the witness we have offered to the larger community through our
service and action for justice. Children will enjoy the fun and families
are called to participate along with our singles and couples. Our Latino
Community is canceling the religious education classes so that they
can participate. Come, join us as we celebrate a century of Spirit!

CATHOLIC TRIVIA
Q. What happened to Ascension Thursday?
Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended into heaven by his
own power. Since the fortieth day after Easter Sunday always falls on
a Thursday, Catholics were required to go to Mass on Ascension Thursday.
However, the Vatican, at the request of the bishops of the United States,
granted permission for the date to be transferred from Thursday to the
seventh Sunday of Easter, one week before Pentecost Sunday. Now each
Catholic/ecclesiastical province in the United States has the authority
to make the transfer. Observing the Ascension on the seventh Sunday
of Easter allows for heightened celebration.

TODAY IS THE FEAST OF THE ASCENSION OF JESUS
A Spirituality of the Ascension
by Rev. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI
The Ascension throws some important light
on the mystery of love and intimacy. What's the Ascension?
It's an event inside of the life of Jesus
and the early church, a feast- day for Christians, a theology, and a
spirituality, all woven together into one amorphous bundle of mystery
that we too seldom try to unpackage and sort out. What does the Ascension
mean?
Among other things, that the mystery of
how we touch each others's lives is strangely paradoxical in that the
wondrous life-giving power of arriving, touching another's life, speaking
words that nurture, doing actions that build up, and giving life for
another, depends also upon eventually leaving, being silent, absorbing
rather than actively doing, and giving our goodbye and death just as
we once gave our presence and our life. Presence depends too upon absence
and there's a blessing we can only give when we go away.
That's why Jesus, when bidding farewell
to his friends before his ascension, spoke these words: "It's better
for you that I go away." "You will be sad now, but your sadness
will turn to joy." "Don't cling to me, go instead to Galilee
and I will meet you there."
How might we understand these words? How
is it better that someone we love goes away? How can the sadness of
a goodbye, of a painful leaving, turn to joy?

ATRIUM & CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD CATECHISTS NEEDED
In order to accommodate new children into our Atrium or Catechesis of
the Good Shepherd program, a Montessori based approach to religious
education, we need additional trained catechists. St. Charles will support
training of new catechists who are willing to make a commitment to teach
for at least two years. See www.cctheo.org and click on courses for
more information on days and times. See www.cgsusa.org for more information
on the Atrium. Contact Anne Marie Kaufmann, 703-527-5500x119 or akaufmann@stcharleschurch.org.

parents. If you are unable to attend and would like to share your thoughts,

WORK CAMP 2009
We currently have 22 high school students who will be serving the residents
of Frederick, Warren, Clarke and Shenandoah Counties from June 22-25
this summer completing about 100 projects for those in need within our
Diocesan community. In order to meet the Diocesan requirements, St.
Charles still needs your help. We need one at least one "contractor"
for every five teens! You don't need to be licensed or certified - we
just need the help of men and women that "know their way around
the Home Depot" - basically if you are comfortable making repairs
around the home and like hanging out with and teaching these skills
to teens. This is a great way to get involved in a tremendous Diocesan
service project that will be celebrating its 20th WorkCamp this year.
Contact Mary Pletcher at mary.pletcher@gmail.com
or Mani at mmani0903@gmail.com
for more details - and thanks for your consideration!
ENROLLMENT FOR FALL 2009 SCHOOL YEAR

Charles School for the 2009-2010 school years. When a parent refers
a family to the school resulting in an enrollment, the parent gets a
voucher for $380 to be used for their child's book fee.
Did you know we have a beautiful and peaceful Catholic retreat center
"in our own backyard"? The Dominican Retreat Center in Mclean

order. If you would like to donate any of these items to help refugees
