JUSTFAITH 2009-2010 BEGINS SEPT.
14
Did your religious formation essentially stop with confirmation in your
Teen years? Are you ready to encounter your faith and the Church's social
mission through adult eyes and with adult experiences as your lens?
If so, then Justfaith can help you take that next step. JustFaith is
a thirty-week program that uses books, videos, conversations about the
most difficult topics of the day, face-to-face encounters with the poor,
and an exploration of what the Christian tradition says about addressing
injustice in our world. JustFaith runs from September to May, Monday
nights from 7-9:30pm. Contact Elizabeth at Elizabeth_dakota@hotmail.com
for more information. We are also in need of facilitators.
TALK ON SUDAN
Earlier this week a massacre in Southern Sudan, in which 185 people
died, showed us that the terror and deaths in Sudan-both in the south
and in Darfur-is, sadly, far from over. On Sunday, Aug. 30th, after
the 6pm Mass, Dr. Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah, a former recipient of the
RFK Memorial Human Rights Award, will talk about the ongoing crisis
in Sudan, and the hopes for peace and reconciliation. Dr. Mohammed is
a physician specializing in the treatment of victims of torture, as
well as a community leader, peace negotiator and human rights advocate.
He is also a member of the Sudanese Center for Rights Promotion and
Peacebuilding, whose goal is to promote peace and reconciliation in
Darfur and Sudan as a whole. Please join us in Benedict Hall after the
6pm Mass to listen to this inspiring man talk about the work he has
done and the promise for peace in Sudan. For more information, please
contact Marisa Vertrees in the parish office at 703-527-5500, ext. 126,
or at mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org
ADVOCACY MEETING
The St. Charles Advocacy Committee is looking for help! Faithful Citizenship
is not meant to stop at the voting booth, but to extend throughout the
year. St. Charles has always offered the opportunity to be an advocate
through our weekly listserv, which alerted readers to upcoming local,
state, national and international events, bills, or council meetings
that our Catholic readers might be interested in, such as life and death
penalty alerts, work on immigration reform, affordable housing, and
solidarity with those in Haiti or the other countries we are in ministry
with. We are now looking to grow, and are in need of new members who
might be interested in putting together letter writing campaigns, helping
to rally people to go to Virginia Catholic Conference lobby days, and
generally thinking of new ways to advocate for the poor and vulnerable!
If interested, please contact Marisa Vertrees in the parish office at
703-527-5500, ext. 126, or mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org.
THANK YOU FROM THE LITERACY COUNCIL OF NORTHERN VIRGINIA
Thank you for your generous gift of $2,067.01 as part of the
tithing program. Every day, hundreds of our Northern Virginia neighbors
benefit from the literacy and English language educational programs
you have chosen to support. So many of their short- and long-term goals-from
reading bus schedules and food labels to studying for the GED and citizenship
exams-begin with acquiring basic literacy and English language skills.
Education is liberating. The ability to read, write, speak, and understand
English can mean the difference between subjugation and empowerment,
between hope and despair. On behalf of the 1,300 volunteers, the Board,
the staff, and the more than 1,600 students of the Literacy Council
of Northern Virginia, thank you for your support. Please know that it
makes a difference. It is changing lives.
Sincerely, Patricia M. Donnelly
