WINTER 08/09 Update

CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE:
Wed Dec 24 – Christmas Eve
5pm Mass in the Church (with children’s pageant)
5pm Mass in the Gym (with children’s pageant)
10pm Mass in the Church (Carols at 9:30pm)

Thur Dec 25 – Christmas Day
10am Mass in English (Carols at 9:30am)
1pm Mass in Spanish

Thur Jan 1 – Holy Day:  Feast of Mary the Mother of God
Vigil Mass on Wed Dec 31, at 7:30pm (English)
Mass on Thursday at 10am (English),   1pm (Spanish)

NEW ST. C. YOUNG ADULT LEADERSHIP
We are seeing some new faces step up to the plate to help plan and coordinate events and programs for young adults here at St. Charles. Our next meeting will be in mid Jan so please let us know if you would like to get more involved in planning and coordinating.

COMMUNICATION
Will be key as we move forward and Anna Pope has agreed to serve as the communication contact for 2009.  She can be reached at ACatholicPope@gmail.com.  The new general email is youngadults@stcharleschurch.org.  We are working on an updated webpage and listerv.  Anna also hopes to get a Facebook page up and running.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS for 100!
St. Charles will be celebrating our 100^th anniversary during 2009.  To open the year of celebration, we will start at the 5pm Mass on Saturday, January 24^th.  A reception in Benedict Hall will follow from 6-7pm.  Then we are off to the International Dinner Dance from 7pm till midnight.  Tickets are only needed for the dinner dance and on sale now.  They cost $20 until January 12^th.  After January 12^th, they will be $25.  Contact Gerry Welch at 703-534-9166 OR email:  cc@stcharleschurch.org.  Let us know if you are willing to reserve and fill a few tables for young adults.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
A.  Help sort hundreds and hundreds of Giving Tree gifts on Fri December 19 (6-9pm); to wrap and pack gifts on Sat December 20 (1-4pm); and to help distribute the gifts on Sun December 21 (2-4pm). We appreciate your help!  amyeklinger@gmail.com or (703) 887-4255.

SPEAK UP IN RICHMOND
Virginia Catholic Conference Lobby Day - Mon Jan 26 in Richmond .  A bus is available for Northern Virginia .  Come and have your voice heard.  Also, Virginia Interfaith Center - Day for People of All Faiths Mon Feb 2.  For more information on these as well as how to get more involved in VOICE (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) contact Marisa Vertrees in the parish office, mvertrees@stcharleschurch.org, or 703-537-5500, ext. 126.

LENT IS COMING!
Believe it or not we have to begin to plan for Lent so we will be ready!  We are now securing facilitators for Lent small faith groups that will run for 6 weeks:  week of Feb 22 through the week of March 30.  Groups are usually 6-10 folks and meet once a week either in a home or at the parish for about 90 minutes.  The groups for young adults usually fill first…but before we form groups we have to have facilitators!  Don’t worry, no experience is necessary.  Training and materials will be provided.  You just need to let us know what day and time of the week you want meet and where you want to start a group.  Let us know if you are interested in facilitating. 

PRAISE & WORSHIP
A group of young adults host monthly small faith groups, praise & worship music and prayer.  Contact them at praise@stcharleschurch.org

BASKETBALL
We are taking a break for now but will resume on Sun Jan 4 for weekly co-ed pick-up basketball from 4 to 5:30pm each Sunday. All skill levels are welcome. Contact: Dave Theis at davidjtheis@yahoo.com.
