Sabbath - Letting the Land Lie Fallow: The Jubilee Year at St. Charles

SabbathIn Biblical times the coming of the Jubilee year meant stopping - no sowing, reaping, harvesting. This type of Sabbath commands us to give rest to the earth and the non-human animals; to care for the natural world and to express gratitude for it. At the beginning of this new millennium, in the midst of the kind of world we live in today, the Jubilee also reminds us to let the land of ourselves lie fallow, to cultivate stillness, solitude and our capacity for mysticism.
